"Traveling to the birthplace of rock n' roll to record a rock n' roll record is an attractive idea. It's also a city I've been drawn to for quite some time. The work of William Eggleston, Jim Jarmusch's 'Mystery Train', Robert Gordon's 'It Came From Memphis', and Alex Chilton (Box Tops, Big Star, Solo) have all had a major impact on me creatively. It really highlighted the benefits of embracing imperfection and a kind of ragged beauty, and I think that spirit found its way to us". - Danny Gonzalez

Gonzalez, Gabriel Alcala, and Diego Monasterios chose to record at Sam Phillips Recording studio based on their shared love of some of the iconic albums that were made there; The Cramps’ Songs The Lord Taught Us, John Prine’s Pink Cadillac, Alex Chilton’s Like Flies on Sherbert and Sam The Sham and The Pharaohs’ massive 60's hit Wooly Bully. With the legendary studio basically being untouched since it opened in 1960, working there felt like a way to facilitate the spirit of those recordings.

On their first night in town, they were fortunate to meet with Robert Gordon at the Lamplighter Inn where they talked about his work, future projects and Memphis in the seventies 70's. Chan Marshall - who also made another great Memphis record, The Greatest - put us in touch and it felt like receiving a blessing upon arrival.

Danny and Gabriel shared guitar and bass duties nearly right down the middle (something they’ve never done before to that capacity) which introduced a new element to the songwriting that hasn't been present on previous recordings. Something like discovering a new entrance to a building you've visited a thousand times. The band wanted to essentially record a live record with minimal overdubs, and the nine songs on the album were entirely recorded in two days.

While recording, proprietor Jerry Phillips (Sam’s son) stopped by the studio, and invited them upstairs for a drink where he shared stories of the early days at the studio and some of the wild antics that would go down. It was like having a direct line to the heart of rock n roll.

Co-produced by the band and Bill Skibbe, with assistance from Memphis local / Grammy nominated producer Scott Bomar (Jay Reatard, Al Green, Cedric Burnside Project) who also supplied great insight about the studio and helped make the trio feel right at home.

“Overall, I think we wanted to make a record that captured a loose energy and recognized our heroes’ time spent in the same city doing the same thing in the same room. We agreed to move as fast as we could and not get caught up on every little detail. We figured, we have two days, let's record as much as we can and whatever we end up with will be a snapshot of our time here. Warts and all." -DG
