Sun Ra "Fate In A Pleasant Mood" LP

Fate in a Pleasant Mood captures Sun Ra and his Myth-Science Arkestra at the end of their Chicago period in 1960, just before relocating to New York. The record reflects the band’s transition: it still carries the lush horn arrangements and swing-inflected textures of the ‘50s Arkestra, but with growing dissonance and stripped-down orchestrations as the ensemble thinned. With Sun Ra on piano alongside key collaborators John Gilmore and Marshall Allen, the music points toward the space-bound avant-garde directions the Arkestra would soon explore.
